Our Place in the Ice : The Final Entry

Nothing has happened since, but this morning I awoke from a dreamless sleep.

Overwhelming pain was pulsing across my legs. So, I pushed myself up and stretched them out. They were wet. My eyes adjusted and saw that for some reason, I wasn’t in my bed.

I was in my bathtub. During in the night I had hunched over inside of it. From the stinging in my sleeping legs, I must have been there hours.

It was dark and I couldn’t stand to reach the light. I focused on my breath and listened to the blood leave my head to return to my legs. I realized there was pain across my forehead too. I lifted my hand and discovered a mark. I rubbed it, felt it’s texture, and realized it formed a curve.

In that moment the pain disappeared, replaced by nothing but cold. My head had been pressed up against the drain. I was bowing to it in my sleep.

It’s been about a week. I’m on call for the next couple of days. I’ll update you all as to how the next rescues go.
